It was the Spring of 1999
that Deborah Smith, Gretchen Ramey, Pam Wilke and I met to invite our
friends to form a Chorale with the following mission statement:
• Strengthen, renew and
preserve the Anglican Heritage of choral music through the highest standards
of performance and literature;
• Provide opportunities for singers who desire a challenging musical
experience;
• Present sacred music for
the enrichment of all denominations and for the general proclamation of the
Word.
It
was our feeling at that time that if we presented excellent performances of
challenging music, good singers would want to volunteer to join our ranks.
After 10 years, this is not the case and the need to hire singers to achieve
balance has increased. For several seasons early on, we attracted
significant financial support and even a financial angel in 2002 and 2003,
making it possible to hire an orchestra for the Duruflé Requiem at
Rose Hills. For various reasons: death, moving out of the area, sickness,
and economics, our financial base has been diminished and we have not been
able to attract enough new sponsors to meet our expenses.
The
Chorale board has been dealing with this reality for several years but at
the most recent board meeting, the board reluctantly voted to make this 2009
Spring season the 10th and last. I hope you will celebrate our
10 years of tours, concerts and Evensong Services by attending one of our
three area concerts. Check the list on the back of this Quire Quips issue.
We plan to keep the non-profit corporation active for one year and we are
open to any ideas for the future. Over 60% of our current singers have been
with the Chorale for over 5 years, and there are 6 who are original
members.
I
appreciate ALL of our sponsors, some for many years, who have made our 10
years possible. Thank You!
James
